Darren Volpe, MD, is a neurologist who treats patients with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. “I value the opportunity to help patients and their families understand how a brain disorder can cause cognitive and behavioral changes in a person,” Dr. Volpe says. Among the types of dementia he treats are frontotemporal, Lewy body, and multi-infarct dementia (caused by multiple strokes). All of these disorders can cause a patient to lose a sense of self, he says. “I’m fascinated by how the brain is involved in our emotions, personality, and in forming a running autobiography of our lives through memories,” Dr. Volpe says.
